Tragedy on Ice: The Death of Georgian Luger Nodar Kumaritashvili
On 12 February 2010, hours before the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili suffered a fatal crash during a training run at the Whistler Sliding Centre in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. Kumaritashvili, just 21 years old, lost control of his sled on the final turn of the track — then regarded as one of the fastest and most challenging in the world — and was thrown off at high speed.
