The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is mourning the loss of retired Chief David L. Fender, who passed away on February 6, 2026, after an extraordinary 43-year career devoted to public service and law enforcement in Los Angeles County.
Chief Fender began his journey with the LASD in December 1974 as a pre-academy deputy and officially became a Deputy Sheriff in 1975. Throughout his early career, he served in key assignments at the Hall of Justice Jail, Men’s Central Jail, Lakewood Station, Industry Station, and the Academy Training Bureau, where he helped shape future generations of deputies.
His leadership and dedication led to steady advancement through the ranks: Sergeant in 1986, Lieutenant in 1996, Captain in 2002, and Commander of the Correctional Services Division in 2008. In March 2014, he was promoted to Chief, later overseeing the Custody Services Division until his retirement on March 31, 2017.
